Preparing for world of work

We want our students to earn a good living! This won't happen by accident so we make sure they are really well prepared for the world of work. We place great importance on developing responsible, hardworking young people who can give something back to society and who will make great employees… or employers!!

Preparing for the world of work at The Derby High School means:

  • making sure students have real responsibility, excellent attendance and are prepared to work hard
  • developing excellent skills in literacy, numeracy, ICT, problem solving, Science, Arts and Living Your Life Well
  • developing students as buddies, mentors, ambassadors and young leaders
  • undertaking two days' work shadow in Year 9
  • an individual options interview for all students and their parents in Year 9
  • undertaking one week high quality work experience in Year 10
  • a wide range of opportunity in business and enterprise. A large number of our students undertake real life working briefs or get involved in enterprise related activities. We win lots of competitions too!
  • high quality careers guidance. We have our own highly experienced guidance officer and also use the Bury Connexions Service
